Why Celestial Events Stands Apart : Not All That Glitters Is Gold

In our magical world of fantasy balls, book signings, and bookish events, it’s easy to get swept up by anything that sparkles. But behind the scenes, not every event is created with care and unfortunately, we’ve seen more and more fans left disappointed or out of pocket due to unprofessional or copycat events.

As the founder of Celestial Events, I feel it’s time to share some insights to help you choose safe, authentic experiences that genuinely value your time, investment (!!), and imagination.

The Rise of Copycat Events

In recent months, we’ve seen an influx of fantasy-themed events using similar names, branding, and even our own trademarked materials (insert frustrated emoji). While imitation may be flattering, it can also be dangerous. These copycat events often lack proper planning, legal protection, or safety procedures leading to cancelled shows, poor communication, or simply underwhelming experiences.

From failed trade expos to ghosted ticket holders, we’ve heard so many horror stories. One Australian cosplay event was recently cancelled without warning, leaving guests without answers (or refunds). Another ball was launched by a fan-turned-host who copied our branding and concepts (until our legal team got involved), only to run into logistical failures and postponed dates. The list goes on.

Why Experience Matters

Celestial Events is a registered company with full public liability insurance and experienced, professional staff and contractors. Every detail of our events is curated to ensure your safety and comfort from trained medical teams and extra security to sensory spaces and solo wristbands for those attending alone.

But more than that, we believe in building community first and foremost. Our goal isn’t to run events ... it’s to create memories and genuine bookish friends in safe, inclusive spaces.

What You're Really Supporting

It’s also important to know where your money goes. While all events and event managers must generate revenue to be sustainable, Celestial Events reinvests in community and causes that matter. Every month we donate to Ecologi, planting trees and contributing to environmental sustainability. With every major event, we invite our attendees to vote on a charity to support - where percentage of ticket sales is donated and documented for transparency. Previous donations have gone to:

  • Bully Zero

  • Ovarian Cancer Australia

  • Black Dog Institute (upcoming)

  • RUOK Day

  • Blood donation awareness campaigns

  • Hidden Disability Sunflower

  • Australian Literacy and Numeracy Foundation

So when you purchase a ticket, you’re not just buying an entry pass you’re helping plant trees, fund mental health research, support cancer awareness, and more. We want you to feel proud of what you’re a part of!

Choosing Events That Truly Care

When considering any fantasy or fandom event, here are five questions to ask:

  1. Is the organiser a registered company with insurance in case things go wrong?

  2. Are they offering accessible and inclusive spaces ?

  3. Are they copying another event’s concept or wording or branding?

  4. Have they worked with respected partners or publishers and contributing to charities?

  5. Are past attendees singing their praises or warning others?

At Celestial, we’re proud to work with trusted partners like QBD Books, Dymocks, and Pan Macmillan, offering everything from exclusive book giveaways to curated fan experiences. We’re proud to share that we’ve also been nominated for the Telstra Business Awards, a recognition that highlights financially sustainable, inclusive businesses that meet a rigorous vetting process.

Final note from Carly...

There’s room in the fantasy world for many creators but not all events are built with the same heart or integrity. If something seems too good to be true, take a closer look. And if the concept feels like a direct copy, it’s often a sign the organiser lacks any original vision or creativity and will be more focused on profit than community.

At Celestial Events, every experience is created with care, purpose, and a deep respect for our bookish community.

I’m here to protect that magic for you! xx Carly, Director Celestial Events
